As a Data Engineer, you will play a role in enabling our mission to implement automation across the full spectrum of database development lifecycle at American Express, thereby driving agility, improved quality, and efficiencies in database software development and operations across the enterprise. You are also a versatile database engineer with a strong background and practical experience with architecting, designing, and developing enterprise-grade database solutions for application developers utilizing Agile and DevOps methodologies.

Focus:
Designs, develops, troubleshoots, evaluates, modifies, deploys and documents all data components (data architecture, logical and physical data models, database objects and Database administration) that meet the needs of customer-facing applications, business applications, and/or internal end user applications.
Organizational Context:
Entry-level hire, member of a data base management or database support team reporting to a Senior Engineer, Engineering Director or Director of Technical Delivery.
Scope
- Works as part of a team of data management professionals supporting a portfolio of development projects, both regional and global in scope.
- Will work with business and application development team partners to analyze and understand business data requirements and translate into data architectures.
- Partners with Sr. Data Engineers and Sr. Data architects to create platform level database designs
- Database platform decisioning
- Database build, administer and maintain
- Data and Database migrations
- Setup High Availability solutions and maintain
- Documents processing requirements inclusive of data and transaction volumes, scalability, security and performance requirements
- Accountable to team for completing assigned tasks and deliverables as agreed upon
- Accountable to team for delivery of quality work
- Understands and has practical experience with infrastructure technologies and components like servers, jvms and networking concepts
- Application of industry best practices, processes and standards
- Identifies a number of ways to do things differently that will continuously improve the product
- CI/CD Integration tools like Jenkins, Liquibase etc.
- Project Management tools like Rally, Jira etc.
- SDLC Methodologies and Practices
Functional Capability
- Assist in database platform selection, db build and data migration
- Monitor and tune databases and DBMS’s to reach high performance – e.g. use data monitoring and analysis tools, tune configuration parameters, alter physical designs, benchmark, etc.
- Configure and administer replication, high availability, encryption, etc.
- Participate in peer reviews of completed data models and plans to ensure quality, and identify alignment opportunities across portfolios or regions.
- Identifies opportunities to adopt innovative technologies to enable business capabilities
- Able to challenge the status quo and drive innovation by generating creative ideas and solutions
- Keeps up-to-date on current research and technology in the industry
- Understands technical aspects of the job and uses appropriate technology for the situation at hand

Recommended Experience:
- Prefer Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Management, Computer Science Engineering or related subject.
- Experience with design and development across EDB/ERA Postgres, Oracle, Couchbase, Cassandra, and SQL Server database platforms
- Broader understanding of other Relational & NOSQL Database Technologies
- Understands the database requirements and translate into physical database design.
- Follows data placement procedures and re-use of existing databases when possible
- Builds and enhances database design and infrastructure required to support the Business portfolio
- Ability to plan and scope data and database migrations
- Hands-on expertise in DB Performance Tuning, Query Optimization & Troubleshooting
- Technical knowledge of DBMS products and ecosystem – e.g. storage formats, access algorithms, data management processes, administration, data maintenance, replication, high availability, encryption, etc.â€
- Ability to monitor and tune databases and DBMS’s to reach high performance – e.g. use data monitoring and analysis tools, tune configuration parameters, alter physical designs, benchmark, etc.
- Has working knowledge of the range of tools used in the planning, analyzing, designing, building, testing, configuring and maintaining of assigned application(s)
- Able to participate in assigned team’s software delivery methodology (Agile, Scrum, Agile XP, Test-Driven Development, Waterfall, etc.)
- Understands and has practical experience with infrastructure technologies and components like servers, jvms and networking concepts
- Open Source and NoSQL will be an added advantage
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
