Position Summary

As we expand our customer deployments, we are currently seeking an experienced Database Reliability Engineer to deliver insights from distributed and diverse enterprise data systems. Specifically, we are searching for someone who brings fresh ideas, demonstrates a unique and informed viewpoint, and enjoys collaborating with a cross-functional team to develop real-world solutions and positive user experiences at every interaction.

Duties And Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

• Monitor the production environments by monitoring availability, performance and taking a holistic view of Database system health
• Improve reliability, quality, and time-to-market of our suite of database solutions
• Monitor, tune and manage scheduled tasks, backup jobs, recover processes, alerts, and database storage needs in line with firm change control procedures.
• Perform fault diagnosis, troubleshoot, and correct problems at the database and application performance level.
• Work well in a team environment within product reliability engineering team as well as with other software engineering teams and other departments within the Wolters Kluwer.
• Provide regular reports on performance and stability of database environment, identifying coming needs proactively to ensure continued reliable service.
• Work with other teams and departments architecting database backend to support new solutions as required for project and operational tasks.
• Tune and improve the database queries to and work to ensure they operate efficiently within the infrastructure; inclusive of making infrastructure recommendations to improve reliability.
• Enjoy constantly learning new technologies and contributing to the knowledge of others.
• Work outside of regular business hours as required for project or operational work.
  
  

Requirements And Qualifications

Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

• B.S. in Computer Science preferred but will consider candidates with a bachelor’s degree in an equivalent discipline or those with relevant experience
  
  

Experience:

• 5 years of experience with Database Engineering, especially with respect to performance tuning and reliability/resilience.
• Experience with multiple database platforms a plus: MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, Postgres, MongoDB, Cosmos DB, MariaDB. Candidate must have Microsoft SQL Server and Postgres experience.
• Software engineering experience in enterprise software environments beyond database development.
  
  

Critical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Solid Database Administration.
• Expert level performance tuning is required.
• Expert knowledge of infrastructure best practices.
• Troubleshoot, investigate, offer, and execute resolution to database issues.
• Experience with UML Modeling/Diagramming
• Expert knowledge of indexing best practices
• Building cloud model servers end to end a plus.
• On-premises to Cloud DB migrations.
• Automation of regular tasks using PowerShell.
• Performance Tuning & Capacity Monitoring.
• Data Security, Backup & Recovery using native and third-party tools.
• High Availability Groups & Replication.
• SQL Server Stand Alone/Windows Cluster Installation.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to getting things done right.
• Experience in Performance Tuning and Index Design/Maintenance.
• Expert level understanding design and writing of PowerShell scripts within SQL Server and WMI a plus
• Experience working with Windows server, including Active Directory.

• Ability to organize and plan work independently.
• Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment.
• Ability to program (structured and OO) with one or more high level languages, such as Python, Java, C/C++, Ruby, and JavaScript
• Able to switch between OLTP and OLAP environments
• Azure Certification is a Plus
• Experience in multiple cloud offerings a plus
• Experience building and utilizing various High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server.
• The applicant will need to have a deep understanding of integrated security and be able to participate in troubleshooting activities.
• The ability to discuss database related topics with both technical & business audiences.
• Monitor and report on database storage utilization.
• Experience with data warehousing, data access accountability.
• Experience writing T-SQL and the ability to understand what others have developed.
• A proactive approach to spotting problems, areas for improvement, and performance bottlenecks
• Ability to manage high availability solutions.
• Experienced in building cloud servers and configuring health check monitoring using PowerShell integration using cloud schedulers through portals.
• Automation using PowerShell scripts.
• Extensive experience with all aspects of setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, performance tuning and optimization, capacity management, monitoring, load testing, and security, including, encryption, and HADR options, such as Always On availability groups, mirroring, log shipping, VM replication, as well as robust backup and restore plans using SQL Server native tools and other third-party solutions.
• Experienced in Upgrade/Migration of database platforms of On-Prem to cloud solutions.
• Self-motivated, with the proven ability to work independently.
• Take ownership of and proactively seek to improve on existing systems.
• Develop automation for both repetitive or unique and complex tasks to reduce overhead and increase reliability.
• Have developed several systems to monitor capacity, audit security, capture events to a database, etc., using a variety of database tools.
• Experience in Installation, configuration, and upgrades of Servers.
• Monitor, optimize and report on system performance.
• Experience with Failover clustering and SAN replication.
• Experience with transactional replication.
• Experience with Cognos/Analysis Services, SAP Business Objects, PowerBI/Reporting Services a plus.
• Experience developing, managing, and testing back-up and recovery plans.
• Experience with code migration of all objects following established change control procedures.
